Peace on Earth

Sunsetting over shag rockIt has been a trying and tragic week for us as Canadians. We’re no more able to make sense of the senseless than anyone else who has tried, and we’re grieving with the rest of the country. We take solace in the peace created on a quiet autumn evening, and in the loved ones around us, and hope our fellow Canadians are able to find that solace, too. God bless.

So Blessed

Boat and Shag Rock in Whiteway, Newfoundland

Joe sent me this picture with the caption, ‘Right now! So blessed.’ So blessed we are, all of us, to share this beautiful island. Getting to share it with our guests is like the icing on the cake. I have been to many places and loved them all but this is something altogether different. This Wonderful World of Whiteway redefines nature and beauty and life in quiet moments. We’re so blessed to get to share it.

Sunset Sunday: Remembrance Day

Since this is Remembrance Day weekend, if ever there was a day to sit by the ocean and contemplate life and our many blessings and many struggles, this is it.

I remember a long time ago I was driving across Newfoundland on business on November 11 and this song came on.  And you know me, I didn’t cry (at least not much; OK – maybe I did have to pull off the road for a few minutes; OK – maybe for more than a few minutes). I thought of my father who went over in 1939, a mere boy of 17 (who falsified his birth certificate). He came back 6 years later a much older and changed man. War has killed the boy in many a man. It is nasty business and we owe them so much.

So please, not that you need me to remind you – take a minute today to remember all those who have sacrificed so much.

Talkin ‘Bout 3 Generations

This post may not be expressly about daily life at the cottages, but close enough. Laurelyn is my brilliant and hard-working (you might say, overly hard-working) partner and if anyone ever deserved a vacation, it was her. Which is what she did last week, when she went to Ontario to visit with her lovely family. I love Ontario, and we get lots of guests from that great province. Laurelyn enjoyed her visit, and I had to share this beautiful shot of her with her mother and daughter – three generations in a row!
