Our Little Ponies

Newfoundland PoniesRecently, our good friend Shirley George visited us at The Doctor’s House and took lots of stunning photos – you can see some more of them here. Of course, our favourite shots were of the Newfoundland ponies (enjoying their new fence, we might add). They’re our favourites probably for the same reason that, despite all the riches and beauty of this place, almost everyone seems to love the ponies best. They’re so gentle and friendly, love people, and of course are just beauties, too. We have to ask – have you pet a Newfoundland pony today?

Tuesday with Murphy: Friday Chills

Golden Retriever in NewfoundlandSo I know the two leggeds have had a lot to deal with lately, with all the storms, power outages, cancellations, you name it. And I know MY two leggeds have had lots of work to do on top of that (something about staff meetings, promotions, new Valentine’s Day at The Doctor’s House plans, who knows). But I don’t worry about the hustle. I like to take a page from my brother, Murphy’s book – just chill! Because he is one cool dog, and nothing’s going to convince him otherwise!

Tuesdays with Murphy: Dogs and Their Sticks

Dogs playing in the Atlantic OceanThere’s nothing better than a good stick, and a good friend to share a romp in the ocean. Here’s me and Bandit, a good friend who came to visit not too long ago. Personally, I’d rather chew on a stick on a bone, and I think Bandit feels the same way!

I’m hoping to have some more friends come and join me, now that we have some fall packages on the go. There’s still so much for a four-legged to get into out here, even though summer’s over!Dog playing in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Newfoundland

Tuesdays with Murphy: Not in MY Henhouse!

Golden retriever protecting a farm in rural Newfoundland

I have an exciting new role – keeping my first cousins away from our chicken coop at The Doctor’s House. I sent word out to all the foxes (and would-be-foxes): “don’t FOWL with me.” We were told that our birds last year fell prey to foxes, weasels, hawks and eagles. Not on Murphy’s watch!

I have a keen eye and great sense of smell to help me in my duties. These eggs are for the kids that come to stay at The Doctor’s House – not for scoundrels who purport to call themselves four leggeds.

Jerry was so pleased when he went to get these eggs. He told me it was the first time he had done it. See that smile on his face – just like the kids will have on theirs when the fetch their own breakfast.

Tuesdays with Murphy: Sleeping with the Enemy

I have no idea why, but Joe Friday somehow grew wings and is flying to Halifax for a vacation. Who needs a vacation from paradise??? Anyway, while he’s gone, his little devon rex cat, Molly, will be our houseguest.

I was a little nervous about seeing Miss Molly – I met her when I first came to Ocean Delight, and she didn’t seem to like me much. I guess to something her size I seem big and scary – when Jerry and The Berry brought her home she snarled, growled, and hissed like a demon fresh out of hell. Thankfully, to know me is to love me, and my nonchalant demeanor won her over – as you can see, we’ve even taken a few close naps together. I’m a lover, not a fighter!

I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship!

And speaking of another beautiful friendship, I love Jerry and I love his blog. If you do, too, this week is your last chance to vote for him for a TopBlog award. It’s easy to vote, no registration necessary – simply head over to this link and find his category on the bottom left, called Best Professional or Business Life Blog. I’d vote, but I think it’s only open to human citizens!

Tuesdays with Murphy: Murphy’s Doppelganger

If you are one of my many diehard fans then surely you’ll remember my friendly rivalry with my niece, Mabel, a sweet (if not slightly overrated, in my opinion) pit bull who owns Jerry’s daughter, Adrienne. They live in Virginia, and (the slightly spoiled, if you ask me) Mabel gets to go on big hikes multiple times each week. Really, I just don’t know what’s wrong with a simple stick thrown into the ocean.

Anyway, imagine my surprise when one of the latest batches of Mabel pictures came in, and I had to do a double-take. No, I have not been engaging in international travel behind Jerry and The Berry’s back! But you can clearly see that Mabel is playing with my doppelganger. My theory: she is so enamoured with all the reports of my daring feats and beatific gentleness that she had to find out for herself if we Goldens are as great as everyone says we are!

And here’s your proof that that’s really not me – no way I would ever lose a water race!

But in the end, who am I kidding? That Mabel sure is one cute puppy, isn’t she?

(And please consider heading over to the TopBlog site to give me a vote in the Best Business or Professional Life category on the bottom left – I could be the only four-legged to win!)

Tuesdays with Murphy: The Berry’s Back

You wouldn’t believe how happy I was to have everything back to normal this weekend, having The Berry back at the cottages after she visited her family. I know everyone has to take vacations sometimes, and I know it was only a week – but in dog years, that’s a few months! And after a few boys’ nights with Jerry, boy was I ready to have a feminine touch back in the house. Especially when it’s this lady, who is the one responsible for bringing me to Ocean Delight in the first place and is always making me so happy. I think I can speak for Jerry when I say I really missed her!

Tuesdays with Murphy: First Mate Murphy

I don’t know what Jerry and The Berry did before I came to Ocean Delight Cottages. Who took them for walks, who kept their feet warm at night, who kept Jerry company while he writes on his computer early in the morning? And, most importantly, who was the First Mate of the A Wake at Last?

Regardless, I’m happy to assume all these duties, even if I haven’t quite mastered my sea legs yet. I certainly enjoyed the food fishery, when Jerry was out fishing and needed someone to clean and lick all the fish that came aboard. Maybe by the time it rolls around next year, I’ll be promoted from First Mate to Captain!

Tuesdays with Murphy: Public Relations

Every day I love Whiteway more and more, so I need to make sure Jerry and The Berry remain vigilant in their customer service so we can stay here forever. They do a good job, but just in case, I’ve appointed myself Public Relations Manager. Who better to greet guests and show them a good time than someone golden, smiling, friendly, gentle ….. (I could go on, but you know me – not one to brag!).

So, I make my rounds to see all the guests and make sure they’re having a good time. Playing fetch is proving to be quite the people pleaser, and it’s a mutually beneficial activity – they love throwing stuff into the ocean, and I love retrieving it.  Just like Ocean Delight, it’s a win-win!
