Here, Kitty, Kitty

Playing with the kittens at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaClearly we like our animals in pairs. First it was our two goldens, Murphy and Friday. Now, we’ve got our two kittens, MiMi and my Shadow, scampering about. They’re cute, and, having been born almost wild, are slowly adjusting to domestic life. They’re quite playful, and sometime quite cuddly, at least when they’re ready for their naps. Nothing’s more relaxing than playing with kittens – we highly recommend it!Our two kittens at our Newfoundland resort inn and spa

Our Growing Menagerie – Wecome Mimi and Shadow!

New cats at our ocean front cottage rentalsWe have two sweet little additions to our menagerie – please welcome MiMi and Shadow (or as we refer to them, ‘Me Me and My Shadow’).  We took these semi-wild kittens in from a neighbour who didn’t have space – and they’re slowly getting used to being around people and, in our case, our big, giant Golden Retrievers, Murphy and Friday. They’re playful and cuddly (although we’re more convinced of the latter than they are yet!), young and adapting to their new home, and quickly becoming beloved members of the Ocean Delight family. Shadow even jumped up to join in a nap the other day – hopefully a ‘shadow’ of things to come.

Tuesdays with Murphy: Here’s to Bob Barker

Golden Retrievers at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaAs a gentleman Golden, it’s a topic I’m generally loathe to speak of, but Bob Barker was right – two-leggeds do need to spay and neuter their four-legged friends. My younger brother, Friday, was recently up at bat, so to speak. He managed like a champ, surely in large part due to my steadfast attachment at his side afterwards. Been there, done that, and I was happy to help in his recovery!

A Dog’s Life

Golden retriever playing at our ocean front cottagesYou might have noticed that Murphy, our golden retriever, has been slack on his blogging duties lately! Normally, Murphy recounts all things four-legged for us in weekly posts. But it’s summertime, and that means there’s lots of dips in the ocean to be had, lots of visiting puppies to play with (since we are pet-friendly at Ocean Delight), lots of barbecues around which to stay alert for scraps! So, we’ll forgive him for letting his social media duties slide – when you see him and his brother, Friday, so happy playing fetch (which is serious business for a retriever!) how could we not?

Bridie and The Berry

Newfoundland pony at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaEveryone leads busy lives these days. We certainly do, as we navigate a new industry, and we know all our friends and colleagues work hard, too. Add in all our devices and on-the-go culture, and it’s hard to unplug! That’s why we love our animals, big and small. They force you to slow down, without your screens and cell phones, and live in the moment while you care for them. Here’s The Berry and Bridie, our Newfoundland pony, going through their evening ritual. It’s truly a blessing!

The Great Escape

Newfoundland ponies at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaTalk about a comedy of errors – especially for someone like Jerry who is mildly afraid of horses! A few evenings ago he was working reception at The Doctor’s House, when through our glass door he saw blurred images moving past quickly.  Knowing they couldn’t be human, he ran and opened the door – to see our 4 ponies and Eweness the Sheep on the gallivant.  They’d found a hole in the fence and taken full advantage.

The Berry was away, and Perry, our caretaker, was unreachable – so it was up to Jerry, slightly (just slightly!) afraid, to figure out how to get our animals, now on the loose, back to the safety of the barn.

So he got some apples and a bucket and went looking for the beasts. He found them in the furthest field from the barn, all smiles, munching on the fresh green grass and enjoying the sweet taste of freedom.

Shaking, a little, bucket in hand, Jerry approached Monty – the leader of the pack.  As Monty munched on his first piece, Jerry put on his rein, held the old bucket in front of his nose, and led him easily (with heart pounding) back to the barn. To his relief, the others followed their leader neatly behind him.

Back at the barn, Jerry released the horses to look for the hole in the fence.  He found it quickly, but not before the four ponies took off in full stride again, down the field and out through the hole, back to where he had last found them – laughing at him all the way.

So Jerry fixed the fence and started after them again.  Thankfully, by this point, The Berry had returned, so she much more confidently led them back to the barn.

Here is the picture we took the morning after the Great Escape.  The animals are clearly not as happy to have given up their freedom – but they are much safer now that their little adventure is over. And, it’s not like we don’t make sure they get plenty of exercise! Newfoundland ponies at our Newfoundland resort inn and spa

Happy Mother’s Day

Celebrating Mother's Day at our Newfoundland cottage rentalsHappy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful moms out there. We have some celebrating with us at Ocean Delight, and at our The Doctor’s House luncheon – and we’re more than happy to make their weekend getaways all that they deserve.

Of course, with The Berry, we have our own wonderful mother to spoil, too. And given all she does around here (trust us, it’s lots!), and all she does for so many – including her new granddaughter, and our menagerie of animals here in the Wonderful World of Whiteway – she really deserves it. Thankfully, we live at the ocean’s edge, which makes celebrating easy!

Happy Saturday

Greetings from our Newfoundland resort inn and spaHappy Saturday, everyone! We hope you have a great weekend – and remember, we have lots of great Spring Specials lined up, so your next weekend could be your best one yet this year, spent with us. And if you’re wondering whether you should indulge this weekend, Murphy’s posing by Shag Rock to remind you, to just smile and say ‘Shag It!’

Tuesdays with Murphy: Shag It!

Golden retrievers playing at our Newfoundland cottage rentalsIt’s getting nicer, but we’re still waiting for that hot summer weather to kick in. And of course. the Atlantic Ocean is cold any time of the year up here in Newfoundland. So you might think dogs would eschew playing fetch in the chilly water these days, and you’d be right – some dogs might. But Friday and I have warm coats and warm blood, descended as we are from the Newfoundland and the archaic St. John’s dogs. So when Jerry throws us some sticks, there’s only one response – Shag It, and jump in!Dogs chasing sticks in the Atlantic Ocean at our ocean front cottage rentals in Newfoundland

Tuesdays with Murphy: Sharing is Caring!

Dogs playing at our Newfoundland cottage rentalsIt’s muddy this time of year, but Jerry is indulgent and knows how much Friday and I enjoy our little dips. So this weekend he took us to play fetch in this swimming hole near the cottages (remember, pets are welcome with us, for a small fee – maybe yours want to come play with us this summer!). Being the big brother, I was happy to share our stick – for a little while. But of course, I had to claim something for my own before the day was done!Dogs playing at our newfoundland cottage rentals
