Budding Saturday: Security At Its Finest

House in Pouch Cove, Newfoundland

Saturday’s we showcase gorgeous pictures of Newfoundland, often taken by the great Bud Vincent. Here’s what Bud said about this shot he captured in Pouch Cove:

“This world of ours sure is changing quickly..I guess there are more properties and homes guarded by special security devices than one would imagine. Yet here, in rural Newfoundland and Labrador, one simply continues on with the old-fashioned way of securing one’s property. Maybe we all can learn a thing or two from this photo …

Just zoom in on the security device on the bottom right hand door.

Yes, it’s a piece of rope wrapped around a four inch nail…Now, that’s security…”

Budding Saturday: Artist’s Eye

Saturday’s on the blog are generally Newfoundland Art Day, and specifically, often photography from old friend Bud Vincent. He’s amazing and prolific, and perfectly encapsulates the beauty of our beautiful island. He sent me these shots the day we were all shut in by the big snow storm. I love sharing them with you – and if you have any great shots, or know of any artists looking for a venue to showcase their work, please send us an email!

First Real Snowfall

We have been decorating and running around taking photos after the first snow fall. Wow! It sure is gorgeous on a different level. It actually makes me appreciate winter – and that’s a very new appreciate for me! Everything crisp and pristine, everything Snow White. I’m even smiling while I shovel (for now at least!)

And my daughter came home for Christmas yesterday, so things are looking good here at Ocean Delight.

Budding Saturdays: Our Island in Winter

Since moving to the Wonderful World of Whiteway, I have made good new friends, and many of them are artists. But one of the best artists I know is an old friend – in fact he got me my first job when I was 14. Bud Vincent has an eye for photography unlike anything I’ve seen, and a love for capturing the beauty of this province. He often emails me such stunning pictures (a few of which are scattered over this site), that it seems a shame not to share them. So he has inspired me to start a new Saturday tradition – of showcasing the wonder of this province through the work of our talented artists. I think mostly I’ll be featuring Bud’s work – but if you or someone you love have something to share, please send it along!

Thanks again to Bud, and enjoy these seasonal shots. Check out his site or contact me if you’re interested in prints. (And don’t forget our Win a Free Stay Contest – we have our own winter wonderland out here you could be enjoying this winter for free!)

Sunset Sunday: Earning Your View

Sometimes you earn your view. Not that we’re not blessed with the sunsets we get to see most nights out our back window. But we captured this one on a hike last weekend. So I guess we’re doubly blessed – beauty in our backyard, more beauty surrounding us when we make a little effort and go out and enjoy nature. Happy Sunday, everyone. Only one month left til Christmas!

Sunset Sunday: Outside and Inside

Sunsets are wonderful in and of themselves, but the way they paint everything around them can be even more stunning. Look at how this one painted the living room. A reminder that every now and then it pays to take your eyes off the sunset to its magic all around.

Sunset Sunday: Bud’s View

This week’s Sunset Shot is so stunning for two reasons, I think. First, it’s a Newfoundland sunset, outside the overpass, so how could it not take your breath away? And the second reason is the skilled photographer. Capturing natural beauty on film is a true art form. And our friend Bud Vincent is a true artist. Take a look at his website and portfolio and you’ll have a hard time believing he’s self taught! And please, keep checking back on this site, as we’d love to be able to use more of his work in the future.

Tuesdays with Murphy: Golden Golden

I think I’m a pretty humble guy, but I swear that Jerry is trying to give me a big head. How else do you explain all the times I’m laying next to him while he’s talking away on the phone with his daughters. I always overhear him telling them that I truly glow, that he never knew a dog like me existed, that I’m bright, intelligent, gentle, and reserved, that I am so obedient and kind and a true ambassador for Ocean Delight. Well to that I say, Jerry, flattery will get you everywhere!

Sunset Sunday: Memories

Ultimately I’m saving this Sunset Series on my blog to show-off how stunning our night skies here are in Newfoundland. But I just had to share this one to prove how longstanding my nightly passion is. Here’s a picture that must be 10 years old, taken by my nephew, Jayson, when he was spending a summer with us in Virginia. Even there, every night, almost without choice as if I was physically being pulled, I spent the night watching the sun go down. Sometimes I had company, like I did here with my daughter, and sometimes I went alone. We lived close to the beach then, but we still had to drive to get these great seats. So I’m thankful now to live in the Wonderful World of Whiteway so I can see the show from my back deck!
