New Fall Menu!

Cheese PlatterIt with great pleasure that I share our new fall menu, the brain child of our fabulous Chef Stephen Pynn. He’s used locally sourced ingredients, including produce from our own greenhouses, to create a fine dining experience that is out of this world.

And lucky us – as inn proprietors, the responsibility of testing each item on the menu falls on The Berry and me. It’s a tough job, but we’ll manage! With items like Baccalieu Trail Seafood Stew (featuring salt cod, coldwater shrimp, and Trinity Bay mussels), Slow Roasted Duck Breast (featuring sardelaise potatoes, blueberry gastrique, and sour cherry jus) and Salted Chocolate Cake (featuring peanut butter semifredo and pecan crumble), I don’t think sampling the menu will be too difficult a task.

Remember that Dining at The Doctor’s House is a fine dining experience, meaning that on top of your three main courses, you also enjoy chef’s amuse bouche, sorbet, and tea or coffee. The whole meal can take two hours or more, and trust me – it’s an experience onto itself. A bit of good company, a splash of good wine, and a table of good food, and those two hours fly by.

This Friday we’ve also got Neil Simmons joining for more live music. What a treat he was last weekend. He’s only going to be playing select weekends this fall, so enjoy him while you can! To make a reservation, please call 709-582-2754, and find our complete menu here. Dine-in only guests are always welcome!

Another Great Weekend at the Shag It – Thanks, Everyone!

Shag It CafeApologies if my posts have been Shag It-centric lately, but … shag it! I’m just excited that we’re open for the summer! We just had our second weekend open for the season, and we’re grateful to the locals and the tourists who came to check out our new menu and our old, extraordinary view. We’re also grateful for our amazing team who are working hard and doing a great job.

Here’s the quiet of the morning, waiting for guests to arrive. The Berry and her team put a lot of work into getting it ready this year, and it looks great. We’re open again next Friday, so maybe we’ll see you then!

Today’s Special

Deck at the shag it cafeJust a reminder: today’s special at the Shag It is chili (served with a homemade roll or bread, of course, because no chili is complete without a homemade roll or bread!). We’ve also got homemade turkey vegetable soup on the schedule for today, and lemon meringue pie (yum, yum). We’ve been really excited by the turnout this year, and hope to see some more happy customers today. We’re open from 11 – 7pm, and the view’s always great. Come on down!

New Fall Menu

Capture‘King of Cod’ Chris Chafe has done it again – this time perhaps even out-doing himself. Here’s his newly created Fall menu for Dining at The Doctor’s House. I guess Laurelyn and I will just HAVE to try out each one of these combinations! If you’re equally tempted, please remember that we serve dinner Wednesday through Saturdays, to both guests at our inn and the general public – we just ask that you make a reservation first. And you can do just that my calling 582-2754 or emailing info@doctorshousenewfoundland.com. Bon appetit!

Follow That Chef!

Meal at our Newfoundland cafe

We’re really excited to announce some new changes to our Dining at the Doctor’s House, the biggest of which is that Chef Cate, our beloved head of the Shag It, will be changing one post for another. Sundays through Tuesdays, she’ll now be preparing delicious 3-course meals made from scratch using local products and organic vegetables, at the nearby Doctor’s House. Pan-fried cod, marinated strip loin steak and spinach and cheese stuffed chicken breast are all on the menu, plus some great appetizers and desserts too (don’t worry, you’ll still be able to get your Chef Cate’s Famous Bread Pudding fix!).

We’ve also added some new open days to Dining at The Doctor’s House – Executive Chef Chris’ popular offerings are now available Wednesday through Saturday evenings. Please call 582-2754 or email info@doctorshousenewfoundland.com for reservations.

We’ve had a great time this year, seeing all your happy, smiling faces at the Shag It Cafe, as you chowed down on Chef Cate’s yummy creations and enjoyed our stellar view. Cate’s move means we’re closing our Shag It doors – not for good, but for the rest of the summer. We can’t wait to see what Cate will do with all her expertise in her new beautiful setting, so please find her there, and remember that the Shag It is open year round for private functions, with seating up to 40. Thanks again for all your support – we loved every minute we were open this summer,  and we hope you did, too!

A Meal with a View

Cod dinner at a restaurant in NewfoundlandIt’s the weekend, and that means it’s the perfect day for a meal with a view. The Berry and I might even treat ourselves to a lovely meal at the Shag It Cafe this Saturday – Chef Cate is up to all her popular old tricks, so why not? Thanks to the Legendary Coasts of Eastern Newfoundland for recently joining us, and for the gorgeous photos – you can see all their shots here on Facebook. And if you’d like to make a reservation (we were quite busy last weekend!!), please call 709-588-4649. Bon appetit!

Cate and Heaven

Servers at our Newfoundland cafeWe often blog about the Shag It on Friday’s, because we get so excited when it’s open! Our new Chef Cate has been growing her garden and serving her fresh food to rave reviews, and each weekend there’s a new, special special to look forward to. Last week’s tacos and pea soup were particular favourties – and who knows what she’ll be serving up this weekend!

With friendly servers like Heaven (above), a great view, and Senior Discount Day today and Monday, we’re so happy to be able to offer guests something truly unique, weekend in and weekend out. And if it sounds like we’re bragging, hey – maybe we’re just angling for Cate to get heavy on the scalloped potatoes next time we stop in!

Dining at The Doctor’s House Now Even Better

Dining Room at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaWe didn’t think he could top himself, but our Executive Chef Chris Chafe, a culinary wunderkind according to travel writer Janice Nieder, has dreamt up a new summer menu …. and it’s divine. From Pink Peppercorn Dusted Local Sea Scallops to Sesame Seared Duck Breast to Rhubarb Frozen Yogurt with Meringue, Coulis and Macerated Strawberries, nearly everything is lovingly handmade by Chris – and lovingly devoured shortly thereafter. Please see the complete menu here.

We’re happy to announce that we’re now open to the public (by reservation only) – so you don’t need to be a guest at the Inn to enjoy these creations. And we’ve got new, extended summer hours. Please join us from Thursday to Sunday, by calling 709-582-2754 to make  your reservation. And please stay tuned – we’ll opening our fully licensed stone patio soon!

And Happy 4th of July to our American readers – have a great long weekend!

Shag It – It’s Father’s Day!
