We recently had a fantastic Screech In at the Shag It, thanks to some wonderful new Newfoundlanders and our wonderful screech’r-in’r, Nanny Lou. In total, our honourary population has increased by 5 brave souls, and we’re lucky to have them! Many thanks to Russell, one of the screeched in, for sharing these pictures. And thanks to everyone who joined us and helped us have such a time – we had lots of fine musicians perform, and everything was perfect.
Family Friday
Weather-wise, it hasn’t been the best summer here in Newfoundland. But for me personally, it’s been quite sunny. That’s because I’ve enjoyed not one but two visits from my daughters in the past few months – a real treat, given all three of my daughters currently live off-island. This is my oldest, Adrienne, who just spend a few days out here at the cottages and The Doctor’s House. She brought her boyfriend, Russ, and it’s been great to get to know him, too (he’s also been screeched in – I’ll post more about that next week!). For now, I’m just basking in the glow of a pleasant couple days with the best possible company, and looking forward to some more precious time before they head back home.
Another Screech In at the Shag It Cafe
Cate may no longer be serving up her delicious meals on the regular at the Shag It Cafe anymore (please find her ‘Fresh, Casual’ menu, now be served Sunday through Tuesday at The Doctor’s House!). But just because we’re not keeping regular hours anymore, don’t forget that we’re still open for private functions, and that we throw a mean Screech-In. This recent batch of CFAs (Come-From-Aways, that is!) were from Virginia, and it was a great night. We’re also happy to accommodate group lunches or dinners, private parties, work events, and functions. To learn more, please see here or call 709-588-4649.
First Screech In at the Shag It
You might have noticed we shut down the Shag It Cafe a little early last Saturday, but it was with good cause. And that’s because we had to ‘screech in’ 22 members of the Angel Famliy, who were celebrating a family reunion. Captain Dickie did a fabulous job, didn’t he?
Screech-Ins are of course a Newfoundland tradition that, if completed by Mainlanders (by, among other things, downing Screech and Newfoundland ‘steak’ and kissing a cod or cod-like substitute), confers upon them unofficial Newfoundlander status. It’s a rite of passage for any intrepid traveller to the island, and we were more than happy to share it with our guests this evening.
The Angels booked this evening at the Shag It. Wwe’re always happy to acommodate private functions – please find more details here. And congrats to all the new Newfoundland-Angels!
My First Screech In
Last year, Joe Friday was our Screecher. I’ve now taken over, with one Screech In under my belt (a Screech In is a fun, irreverent way for outsiders to become honourary Newfoundlanders – kissing a cod may or may not be included!). Many thanks to Ann and Zofia, and Herb and Linda from Petawawa, for being our guinea pigs!
Still Screeching
Remember the Vanderveens, and the Old Man on the Sea? Well Joe Friday couldn’t let them go back to the mainland without a Screech In! He needs the practice if he’s going to be a real Screecher! They were a fun bunch and it was a fun night – all smiles and good sports for the cod-kissing. It helps that they loved their time at the cottages and plan on coming back next year (music to our ears!). And of course, as usual, Mr. Murphy wanted in on the action – he loves people, even when they’re downing questionably strong rum!
Screeching In!
Well, we’re not experts yet, but this weekend we hosted our first Screech-In, and MC Joe Friday did a great job, if I do say so myself! Shauna and Geoff from Kingston were our first targets, followed by Ron and Sheryl from Toronto (apologies for the blurry photos – I’m still getting the hang of taking shots is low light!).Screech-Ins are of course a Newfoundland tradition that, if completed by Mainlanders (by, among other things, downing Screech and Newfoundland ‘steak’ and kissing a cod or cod-like substitute), confers upon them unofficial Newfoundlander status. It’s a rite of passage for any intrepid traveller to the island, and we were more than happy to share it with our guests (and Murphy, who wanted in on the action!). It was a lot of fun, and we’ll be doing another for guests later this week – who asked if they could pay for it, but that’s hardly the Ocean Delight way!Joe Friday, usually loathe to be the centre of attention, loves his new post as Master of Ceremonies!Geoff is now branded a Newfoundlander for life – gotta love it!
