Pretty Fresh

Catching lobster off the coast of st. john'sHave we convinced you yet that seafood in the Wonderful World of Whiteway is just about as fresh as it gets? Here’s a little more proof – local fisherman catching lobster, right at our back door. And there’s nothing better than seafood caught the day you eat it.

Remember that for the rest of June, we’ll provide 2 free pounds of lobster for every 2 night reservation. Just a little more incentive to enjoy a weekend around the bay!

Soaking Up Local Culture

Newfoundland food at a Newfoundland festivalWe had a great time in Bay Roberts this past weekend, celebrating Newfoundland food and culture and our connection to the sea, at the annual Songs, Stages and Seafood Festival.  The food was amazing, and we’re not just biased because our executive chef at The Doctor’s House, Chris Chafe, did a fabulous job on his halibut on birch. The meal was especially good because of a new program that lets your track where your fish comes from. Go to www.thisfish.info  and key in N625586 to find out where Chris’ fish was caught, who caught it and more. This new traceability program was created by the Fishery Union  to help tourists become familiar with our culture and our people – very cool!

Thanks to the organizers of this great event, for promoting Newfoundland culture, and the Baccalieu Trail (our favourite!) in such a fun and novel way. Executive chef at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaGourmet Newfoundland food prepared by the chef of our Newfoundland inn and resort

Maiden Voyage

Diving for mussels on the Atlantic Ocean in Newfoundland

Life is different out on the water! We took Boston Whaler, the A Wake at Last, out for the first spin of the season the other day. The engine worked like a charm – what a comfort to go out on the water and be ‘pretty’ sure you won’t have to call someone to tow you back.

Then we met up with Andy and Uncle Jay from Cavendish, who were diving for muscles. They gave us a tub full of them. They were the freshest muscles I’d ever seen and they were sweet when we ate them an hour later. All in all, it was a great start to the boating season.Fresh Mussels caught off the coast of Newfoundland

Scallops and Ducks

No doubt we are getting spoiled out here! The day before yesterday, Alf went scallop fishing (with his invention for catching them from his boat), and he kept The Berry and her love of seafood in mind. Her brought her over two meals worth of the freshest and biggest ones she’d ever had. Out of the water and into the frying pan!

The yesterday, Clifford (yes, THE Clifford George) sends down 7 duck eggs (which are bigger than a large chicken egg). Holy Duck! What a place we live in! What Ducking nice people! I’ve been doing some work on a new rock garden, so it’s been great to have a full belly while doing it. Between this and all that bread, my waistline might take a hit this summer!

Fresh Fish Followup

If you love fresh seafood, Newfoundland is your paradise. I’m sure it’s one of the reasons we get so many tourists. And as I blogged a few days ago, we were treated to some delicious fresh and local lobster last week – a treat fit for a king (or a queen actually, as I’m mildly allergic – boo! – so it was The Berry who enjoyed them).

Those lobsters (lets call them what they were – monsters!) were so big, we saved a claw for Laurelyn’s son, Adrian – who got to enjoy it when he came out this weekend to help us celebrate Mother’s Day (I hope you all had a good one, by the way). So here he is enjoying the monstrous beast! Ironically enough, Laurelyn’s son is named Adrian, and we named our first daughter Adrienne. Coincidence? And there you have it – the end of the perfect lobster. I’m a classic Jim Carrey fan, and I can’t help but think about this scene from Liar Liar when anyone mentions ‘the claw.’ Too funny.
