Shag It from Beyond the Shore

cafe and gift shop in Newfoundland

Murphy, gentledog that he is, happily gave up his Tuesday blogging post so that I could share some happy news that has been a long time coming – we have opened the Shag It Cafe and Gift Shop! Yesterday was quite busy and a bit of a blur, but I’ll upload some pictures soon (and stay tuned for upcoming events and specials!).  We’re really thrilled to be able to offer fresh, healthy and local food and beautiful gift and art items, not only to our guests at the cottages, but to our community and passing visitors as well.

When we say we have an amazing view because we are right on the water, we mean, we have an amazing view because we are RIGHT on the water! Here’s the Shag It Cafe and Gift Shop as photographed from our boat, The Awake at Last. Now that we’re open, it’s going to be fun to see this patio filled with (hopefully happy!) customers! Our Whiteway Cottages and Newfoundland cafe and gift shop

Running with the Herd at The Doctor’s House

Horses at The Doctor's house Inn and Spa, luxury in Newfoundland

We are surrounded by wonder and beauty at The Doctor’s House and the Wonderful World of Whiteway. Between Murphy, the ponies, the chickens, the flowers, the trees, the ocean, the trails, Shag Rock, Long Point Cove …. I don’t know which is more beautiful. It’s an embarrassment of riches, and this you can be sure of – we don’t take any of it for granted. Here’s The Berry tending to the horses – truly a labor of love!

Thankfully, my daughter is in town to share it, and we get to celebrate her birthday today – Happy Birthday, Kathryn!

Budding Saturday: Beautiful (if foggy) Elliston

Elliston, Newfoundland, a small community

Today’s Budding Saturday features the work of from Bud Vincent, a Newfoundland photographer extraordinaire. This picture is of beautiful Elliston. Of course I’m partial to all things Baccalieu Trail, but we’re very happy to be one stop on our guests’ travels. There’s so many beautiful places to visit on this beautiful island!

Weekly Specials at The Doctor’s House

The Doctor's House Inn and Spa in rural Newfoundland

I appreciate that people enjoy reading my blog so I try not to use it for selling or advertising too much (although I can’t help what Murphy gets up to – he’s a born marketer and likes to talk up the place!). But I thought I would take this Friday to share a fact you might not be aware of: each Friday, we release new, weekly spa specials at The Doctor’s House. They’re a great way to try us out or treat your friends at a great price. New specials will be posted each Thursday evening on our Specials and Packages tab, so be sure to tune in each week. This week – Eye Contour Treatments and a Carribbean Therapy Pedicure. And don’t think I don’t appreciate these treatments myself – I love being a metrosexual! Tuesdays with Murphy: New Trails

Hiking Trails on the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland

You know me – always up for an adventure. That’s why I was thrilled when I was able to convince Jerry and The Berry to check out D’Iberville Trail on a fun day trip. It was an easy walk with great vistas – what more could a four-legged ask for? Any guests staying with us – please ask if you’d like some recommendations for similar things to do near the cottages, and please also see our Things to Do section. Day Trips: Old Perlican

I always say Newfoundland is a day-tripper’s paradise, especially here on the Baccalieu Trail. Head out in any direction and you’re sure to stumble upon great little communities and great big nature. With the little free time The Berry and I have this summer, we’re trying to do a little exploring ourselves, checking out things on our own Things to Do page (a great resource by the way!). To that end, we recently checked out Old Perlican, a community on the northern tip of the peninsula, a little over an hour’s drive from the cottages. It was a really fun, leisurely day with lots of great scenery. And especially fun for Murphy who found a new place to take a dip! I’d highly recommend it (and guests, please always feel free to ask for recommendations!).Exploring the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland

Budding Saturday: Talented Guests

Long Point Cove in Heart's Delight Newfoundland

Saturday’s are basically ‘Look How Pretty Newfoundland Is Day’ on our blog. We like to feature beautiful pictures of our beautiful province. Often that means pictures from the talented Bud Vincent. Today, we’re happy to share some pictures Peter Humby sent us from his family weekend at our cottages in Long Point Cove. Peter’s a return guest with a great family, and clearly an eye for photography. Thanks to him for sharing, and enjoy!

Picking the World’s Largest Cranberry

Moving a cottage in NewfoundlandHere we are picking up the new Cranberry up from our neighbour Craig’s house and planting it between the Blueberry and the Partridgeberry. It was The Berry’s idea to welcome this new unit to our Ocean Delight family, since the original Cranberry is being converted into a cafe and gift shop.

It was quite the feat. We had two boom trucks and a transport truck. It was tricky coordinating the trucks to be completely in sync. Gord and Martin did a fabulous job. And you should have seen John drive that truck. For video, please see here and here.

So the Cranberry  is now in its rightful place along the other Berries, thanks to The Berry and a fabulous team. We’re going to turn it into our first chalet – we can’t wait!Moving a cottage in rural NewfoundlandMoving a cottage to rural NewfoundlandCottage in Newfoundland

Tuesdays with Murphy: Summer’s Here!

Golden Retriever playing in the Atlantic Ocean at Newfoundland cottagesLots to be excited about here at the cottages (upcoming on the blog, you’ll be reading about a new cottage, some workshops, some new shenanigans from Clifford). But what I’m most excited about? The fact that the weather is starting to turn and that summer is upon us. I can’t wait for all the hikes, all the boil-ups, all the marshmallow roasts. And, most importantly, all the dips in the ocean! And pets stay free for the rest of June, so that might mean a few extra playmates for me!

Budding Saturday: Red Cliffe

Newfoundland barns in Red Cliffe

Saturday’s are Newfoundland photography on the blog. In our books, not many better photographers out there than our friend Bud Vincent. Here’s one he got in Red Cliffe. He says: “One of the movie set sites of the movie The Grande Seduction..this was taken at Red Cliffe, BB. This is a really perfect place for photographers and photographer wannabees… and anyone  period.  Enjoy.” So, you heard the man – enjoy!
