Dining at The Doctor’s House Now Official!

Chef at our new restaurant in NewfoundlandHere’s the fabulous Chef Anna Dohey (and Rosie the Goat!) who has helped us help The Doctor’s House reach it’s true potential, by running a to-die-for meal service for us each weekend (this weekend, among other choices, included braised lamb shanks with Newfoundland berry wine, for example). Anna is a true gem, and brings lots of experience, including having also run Tea at the Garden at MUN Botanical Gardens.

And we’re thrilled to share that The Doctor’s House is now featured on edining.ca – here’s our listing. Here’s The Berry’s words (not mine!): “Dining at The Doctor’s House promises romantic old-world charm and delectable classic cuisine made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients.” Hear, hear.

And I’d be remiss if I didn’t remind you that we now have our New Year’s Even menu planned

A Light Dusting

Cottages for rent in Newfoundland

I hated winter til moving here to the Wonderful World of Whiteway. A light dusting here by the ocean adds unspeakable charm. Now, maybe after a rough winter or a few snowstorms in I’ll feel differently, but The Berry and I spent this past weekend cozied up in one of our Heart’s Delight cottages, and it was heartwarming and so re-energizing. We went on a hike with the goldens, watched Christmas movies, drank hot chocolate, and didn’t talk about work once. Good for the soul. Now I can’t wait for Christmas! The loon, our cottage for rent in Newfoundland

Still Love the View

View at our oceanfront Newfoundland cottagesWe recently introduced a special Buy One Night, Get One Night Free offer for the holiday season, and we’ve gotten a good response – and to me, this picture captures why. We’re so blessed in this province to never be too far a drive from the ocean and beautiful vistas. But when the ocean is literally right off your back deck, something magical happens, and it’s totally engrossing and relaxing. I can see why people like the thought of getting away from the holiday hustle for a few nights!

In My Heart’s Delight

Heart's Delight in NewfoundlandSometimes, Laurelyn and I like to spend time in our cottages in Heart’s Delight. It’s nice to spend the weekend where our journey began around two years ago. It is hard to imagine we didn’t own these cottages until Nov. 26, 2011. Spending time here, looking out the window, puts it all in perspective. This place is magical and therapeutic – and so worth all the time and energy we give it. Even as we approach the winter months, we’re still so lucky to be able to get out here every chance we get. If you’d like your own magic and therapy, stay tuned and please sign up for our mailing list, as we’ll be sending out a new offer from the cottages soon.

Tuesdays with Murphy: This is the ‘Off’ Season???

Conference about Newfoundland travel and hospitality

Boy, am I glad I’m not Jerry or The Berry – those two work like dogs, I tell you! Thankfully, my fellow four-leggeds and I (including my new little brother, Friday, who is doing great, by the way!), get some rest here and there. But Jerry and The Berry spent all weekend at a wedding show in St. John’s (they’ve hired some consultants, are renovating our big barn and will have The Doctor’s House ready for parties of up to 200 by this summer).

I thought after all that work, they’d need a minute to rest. Not so! Now Jerry’s off to Clarenville for a conference for the Eastern Destination Management Organization. I don’t know much about EDMO, except from what I overhear. And that’s that they’ve been instrumental to our success at Ocean Delight, so for that I guess I’m grateful! I think Jerry will be talking more about their great new website, The Legendary Coast, soon!

Weddings at The Doctor’s House

Our booth at the wedding show for our Newfoundland inn and spaWe had a a terrific time yesterday manning a booth at our first every Devotion Wedding Show in downtown St. John’s. The Berry has been working hard to put together some wedding packages for The Doctor’s House, and we welcomed the opportunity to showcase our beautiful inn and spa, which we both know will make for truly stunning and special occasions. We have a few weddings booked already, and we’ll be looking forward to them.

And after all, the Baccalieu Trail is meant for lovers, what with names like Cupids, Heart’s Content, Heart’s Delight, and Heart’s Desire. And given its beauty and proximity to St. Jonn’s, we think the Trail, and The Doctor’s House, both are a natural choice for wedding destination. As always, if you’d like to hear more about our wedding packages or any other questions related to The Doctor’s House, please email info@doctorshousenewfoundland.com. And, here’s to love and marriage!

Thanks to the Wonderful World of Whiteway

Beautiful day in Trinity Bay in Newfoundland, Canada

This will probably be one of the busiest Thanksgiving’s ever, thanks to the special Turkey Dinners we’ll be serving at the Shag It. But it is also a year filled with blessings and so many reasons to give thanks. The Berry and I have each other and work that we love, and beautiful families both near and far. And of course, we’ll be forever grateful for the day when we made the fateful decision to start our Ocean Delight journey.

Shag Rock still takes my breath away. When the sun sneaks up over the back country, it pours it light on it, our muse. They play with each other all day. Shag Rock is made alive by the many colours the sun paints it as it moves in and out the bay. It is constant and constantly changing. So I call this the Wonderful World of Whiteway  for a reason. If your spirit needs a lift, there is spirit-lifting magic here – and I am thankful for it everyday. And may God bless you and your family this Thanksgiving weekend.

Thanksgiving Plans at the Shag It

Thanksgiving at the Shag It cafeWe all like to indulge and give thanks – that’s why everyone loves this upcoming weekend, and the opportunity to spend extra time with loved ones. I’m putting on my Marketing Cap (borrowed from The Berry!) to get the word out about our specials this weekend at the Shag It. It’s our first holiday at our new cafe and we’re excited about it.

Saturday night, we’ll be offering a 3 course meal, starting at 7pm. Enjoy soup or salad, ham with scalloped potatoes and veggies, and choice of dessert, for $24.95 per person.

We’re also very excited about our plans for Sunday. Compliments of Chef Robert Piercey, we’ll be offering two sittings of a full, 3 course Thanksgiving Turkey dinner (one at 12:30, one at 6pm). It’s $29.95 per person, and we’ll have the cafe beautifully decorated for an elegant evening. Why slave in the kitchen when we can do it for you!

Anyway, if you’d like more information or to make a booking, please call Joe at 588-4649. I sincerely hope to spend time celebrating this weekend with you, and, regardless, wish you a cherished holiday with cherished family and friends. Enjoy your long weekend!

Red Hat Ladies

Guests at our Newfoundland Inn and Spa

We recently had a dozen wonderful ladies join as for lunch and a tour at The Doctor’s House. They made up the Red Hat Society, fabulous women over 50. They are a lively and lovely bunch who just loved the place, the ponies and Rosie the Goat. She’s turning out to be a great ambassador for us – everyone loves her!

Thanks to the Red Hat Ladies, for making us a part of your day – we hope to see you back!Guests at our Newfoundland Inn and SpaGuests at our Newfoundland Inn and Spa

Tuesdays with Murphy: Cousin Jayson

Guest and golden retriever at our ocean front cottage rentalsOf course I love all our guests and take my duty as Guest Relations Manager quite seriously. But my job is always just that little bit more fun when family comes to visit. This is Jerry’s nephew, Jayson. I guess that makes him my cousin? Either way, he doted on me, I doted on him, and it was fun to have him around!

Jayson was visiting Ocean Delight for a weekend getaway, only about an hour outside Torbay, where he’s from. If you’d like your own retreat, remember that we’ve got some great fall specials, both at Ocean Delight and at The Doctor’s House. I hope to see you soon!
