Shag Rock Sunday: View from the Cranberry

Shag RockHere’s the lovely view from the back deck of our Cranberry Cottage. Of course this was taken a few weeks ago before winter began, but trust as – it’s equally lovely no matter what the season or weather. That’s why The Berry has come up some enticing winter packages that make your overnight stays at our Whiteway cottages even cozier this year, with firewood and movies included! Check out all the details here.

Whiteway Cottages Open All Winter!

Golden retriever at our Newfoundland cottagesWe’re happy to announce that our Whiteway cottages are going to be open all winter long, even The Cranberry! And we’re soon going to be unveiling some specials that will make your stay just a little bit warmer, so please stay tuned. So many tourism operators in Newfoundland shut down over the winter, so we’re happy to provide getaway space for anyone who loves to be right on the water’s edge, no matter what time of year it is. Given the number of trails around us, it’s a great time for snowshoeing, skiddoing, or taking your dogs on some enthusiastic walks!

‘Date Night Special’ Extended Through December!

Winter at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaWe are happy to announce that we have just extended our Date Night Special all the way through December. Now you can come enjoy a cozy night away at our romantic inn, coupled with a gourmet meal prepared by our now legendary and award-winning chef, Chris Chafe, plus a yummy hot breakfast, too. We’re finding it’s not just couples who are taking advantage of this indulgent getaway – many girlfriends are using it as an excuse to getaway, drink some wine, and maybe throw in a spa treatment (or two!) as well. Our Date Night to Remember has been extended until December 21, so that you can get some needed peace and relaxation amongst all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season!

Please note as well that for the rest of the season, both our Inn and Dining will be open to reservation only, Thursday through Saturday nights. After December 21, we will close for the winter – so please come visit before we do.

And a final note – we’re open for group Christmas dinners and parties, both at The Doctor’s House and at the Shag It. It might seem early, but now is really the time to start making your plans. Stay tune for more details!

Winter Weather

Shag Rock in NewfoundlandYes, the weather this Spring has left a little to be desired. But The Berry has been in Ontario visiting family these past few weeks, and we’ve actually had nicer weather than here than she has. So I try to remember that the grass is always greener. And anytime you can see grass, at least that’s a blessing! We’re hoping everyone is having a safe and happy long weekend, and looking forward to The Berry’s return Monday. Enjoy your Saturday!

Good Good Friday

Easter greetings from our Newfoundland cottage rentalsIt’s Good Friday and the start of the long weekend for many. We hope that whatever your beliefs and traditions (we know this is a big fish-and-chips-day for many Newfoundlanders!), that you can take time to take time, enjoy your family and friends, and maybe squeeze in a few extra chocolates! The weather isn’t promising to be great, but Newfoundlanders know how to enjoy themselves no matter what the thermostat says. And don’t forget – we still have room for Easter Brunch at The Doctor’s House. We think Chef Anna may top herself this time!

Dana On the Edge

At a sustainable tourism conference in NewfoundlandYou may have heard me mention Dana from time. She’s our new Events Manager at The Doctor’s House, she’s doing a fabulous job, and she’s worth her weight in gold – we’re really happy to have her on board. We were also happy to send her to the Gros Morne Institute for Sustainable Tourism‘s Edge of the Wedge Course last weekend. Here’s Dana and some new friends learning to snowshoe in Gros Morne.

If you have a REALLY good memory, you’ll remember that I took this fantastic course two years ago, when we had just begun our Ocean Delight journey. I learned tons – and that’s why we knew it would be a great experience for Dana. The course centers on how tourism operators can use their local community to create an experience that is rewarding and enriching for both tourists and locals alike. This has been a key guiding principal for how we think we about what we do out here in the Wonderful World of Whiteway, and we highly recommend it for all our colleagues.

Last Sleigh Ride of the Season

Sleigh Ride in rural NewfoundlandThere are few things in the world more delightful than Clifford out with his Newfoundland Pony, Annie. His wife Shirley sent us these shots from last week, from what they believe will be the last sleigh ride of the season. She reports that the paths have broken down in the woods, and the sun is gaining its power, so it’s time to put the wintertime fun away. But we’re sure these rides were a bright spot in an otherwise dark season! And if you’d like to see this sleigh-ride live, then check our this video!

Twilight Hour

Watching the sun set over the Atantic Ocean in St. john'sSo ok, ok, it’s true – we haven’t had the best winter. But when twilight hour strikes, there’s still some magic there! We’re busy here putting together some new Spring specials and packages. Just take a cue from the Little Engine that Could – instead of ‘I think I can, I think I can,’ keep saying ‘I think it’s Spring, I think it’s Spring!’ It’ll start to warm up before we know it!

Love Bannerman Park

Playing with golden retrievers in Bannerman ParkWe’ve spent some time recently in St. John’s (it’s only about an hour away, so it’s not a big deal to travel back and forth), and so the goldens got to enjoy some city-time, too. Here they are in Bannerman Park, where they have finished a skating ring that is just beautiful. Lots of skaters with big smiles. Newfoundlanders sure know how to make those most of out (even a bad) winter!
