Let’s Get Ready to Rumble

New tractor at our Newfoundland inn and spaOur latest baby at The Doctor’s House isn’t what you might think, given our penchant for rescuing animals and the several pregnant females in our barn. We’re so excited to welcome this new tractor to the family!

This tractor comes with bucket and backhoe, a road grader, plow, fertilizer spreader, and some other gadgets – maintaining 100 acres takes a lot of work and needs a big machine!

It’s 30 Horse Power, meaning it can do the work of a herd of about 50 Newfoundland ponies (and ff you look closely at the picture above, you can see our Newfoundland ponies in the background).  This tractor will be cheaper to feed (not that our ponies are ‘work ponies’ anyway), and require a lot less maintenance and room to store.  It will need a mechanic instead of a doctor.

So you can see why these types of machines overtook animals.  But they’ll never replace them.  No matter how much we like it, this tractor will never come up to you and give you a hug, look you in the eye, maybe beg an apple or two. But Beauty, Shamrock and Month? Every time you visit!

All in a Day’s Work

installing a fence at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaHere are Hubert and Leslie, who can do just about everything, putting up a wrought iron fence at The Doctor’s House. It’s about 150 years old and had been seriously damaged, but a local welding shop refurbished it. With these expert hands installing it, we think it looks pretty nice! Thanks, Joe!

If you’ve been to our cottages or even just read our blog a little bit, you know how essential Joe Friday has been to our operation here – the Wonderful World of Whiteway would be a little less wonderful without him! It has always warmed our hearts to see how much our guests love him, too. Take this recent review on Trip Advisor, simply titled ‘Awesome.’ According to this guest, “Upon arrival Joe Friday (who is the jack of all trades) greeted us with his awesomeness! He had the fire going, lights dimmed and popcorn and Hot chocolate waiting for us. My friends and I spent an evening in solitude. This truly is a little piece of heaven. Customer service was excellent and atmosphere was superb! It was Awesome! This place would be top of my list to recommend for anyone!

So while Joe might brag about himself, we sure can! I’ll include a recent comment left in our guest book, below. As always, thanks, Joe, for all your hard work (and if you’d like to see what all the fuss is for yourself, don’t forget about our Stay in and Stay Warm package, which adds all kinds of cozy extras to your stay, now through the end of March!).guest book entry at our newfoundland cottages

Looking for an Esthetician

Inn and Spa in rural NewfoundlandWould you like to work here? We’re hoping to add a great new esthetician to our team at the The Doctor’s House. It’s part-time for now, with possibility of becoming full time next spring. We’re looking for someone experienced, of course, but also for a friendly team-player. If that’s you, please email Rosemary at info@doctorshousenewfoundland.com. If it’s someone you know, please forward along the information! For more info, please check out this link.

Plowing the Fields

Clifford George sent us these great shots with one simple description: “ATVs were the demise of the Newfoundland Pony.” Amen! Looks like Cliff does a pretty good job pulling his weight, though!

Man Hands

What do you get when you work you fingers to the bone? Boney Fingers!

Well, I got the hands my father always wanted me to have. Growing up, whenever we shook hands he would pull away and always say, “you have hands like a girl.” I liked that, probably because he didn’t. And besides, I always thought that smooth and soft hands were a calling to a lifestyle different from my ancestors.

But here’s a couple of pics after a hard day’s work on Project DIY (we’re renovating an apartment I rent) – we’ve been knee-deep in hard labour quite literally for over a week now. I look like the Chimney Sweep in Mary Poppins. I don’t have finger prints – they got worn off.

But there is a big reward for this kind of work. It is good for the mind, body and soul, and at the end of a day you can measure what you did. And then take some Advil, pour a bath and a Malbec, put on Christmas music, and soak the day away. I went from no finger prints to prune hands (not to be confused with these ‘Man Hands’). Life is good when you do that!

Busy Busy Busy

It’s a rare day that my blog doesn’t go up first thing in the morning (I usually write them the night before), which maybe legitimizes my claims that we’ve been working like crazy the past few weeks. If this summer we were busy with the day-to-day of physically running cottages, lately we’ve been focusing on long term goals and strategies (like the rebranding you see on the sign above). We’re also working on a new online booking system, so keep an eye out for that.

In the meantime, if you’ll forgive me my late post and still enjoy this blog, please consider voting for me for Canadian TopBlogs award. My category is Best Business or Professional Life blog on the bottom left of this link, and you don’t need to register to vote. Thank you!

Busy, Busy, Busy!

A busy weekend but a good one. On top of all the moving and building and painting and etc, we also got to meet and register several guests – that’s the fun part that makes it worthwhile.

Now, if you’re looking to book, we promise that every cottage is already gorgeous, stocked, and ready to be enjoyed. But, we’re still new owners, so we’re doing a lot to make the cottages “ours.” Our target is to have everything in place by the end of March so we’ll be completely ready for high season. Can’t wait!

And a busy work day’s not so bad when Laurelyn knows how to cook up a mean tortellini with meatballs, and I know just how to pair it with the perfect red wine – overall, it’s been a great weekend!
